tata-nano-2009The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Yvo de Boer, said a day after the Tata Nano’s launch that there was nothing wrong with a ‘people’s car’ for ordinary Indians. Boer said at a press conference that the Nano could not be trashed simply due to emission concerns because Indians, as much as anyone else in the world, had the right to own or aspire to own their own cars. “I am not concerned about it (the Tata Nano) because people in India have the same aspirational rights to own cars as people elsewhere in the world,” he said. He did, however, say that auto makers should make greater use of green technologies for building cars. He said there was an urgent need to reduce greenhouse emissions the world over, for which new kinds of fuels, vehicle technologies and more efficient engines could be used.
