The new Swift, to be first launched in the UK, will be sportier and more spacious than its current version. It will be built on a new platform, with a longer wheelbase and a 90 mm increase in overall length. The car’s front and rear tracks will be wider by 10 mm and 5 mm respectively, while the size of its wheels will be increased from the current 14 inches to 16 inches.

Maruti has no yet revealed pictures of the new car’s interiors, but says that it will be more ‘dynamic’ in comparison to the present version. The longer wheelbase will make more room for rear passengers, and the interiors will continue to be done up in black with traces of silver. The version to be launched in the UK will come with a 1.2-litre Dual VVT petrol engine and a standard manual gearbox with automatic transmission as an option.

A Tata Motors spokesperson told reporters that customers who come for a test drive are also being invited to keep the car for 15 days to get better acquainted with it. The company has so far delivered 50,000 units of the car, which was launched in March 2009, and will declare open sales after completing the first 1 lakh orders.

When the Nano was launched, Tata Motors could not allow customers to test drive the car because it was not available in sufficient numbers. However, with the Sanand plant now operational, the company is trying to make up for lost time by going one step further and offering a free 15-day trial. According to industry observers, the Nano, with its low pricing and high mileage, may prove to be a major threat to Maruti Suzuki, which leads in small car sales. While Tata Motors’ market share may go up by 7 percent in another 2 years, as the Nano becomes available in larger numbers, Maruti Suzuki’s market share may fall to 45 percent.

The new Alto will be powered by a 1-litre K-10 engine, also used in the Estilo, and will give a mileage of approximately 20.2 km/litre. The car will also be 125 mm longer and more spacious than the Alto’s existing version. It will be available in two variants expected to be priced between Rs 2.8 lakh and Rs 3.4 lakh. According to media reports, Maruti’s decision to launch an upgraded version of the Alto comes as a response to competitors’ plans to launch similar products. Both Tata Motors and Hyundai are planning to launch new compact cars priced at approximately Rs 2-3 lakh, and Maruti, with the new Alto, will already have an established product in the segment by the time the other two companies launch their cars.

The company is also planning to launch an automatic version the Maruti A-Star. The car will be launched within the next few months, and is likely to be much costlier than the existing variants of the A-Star. With the automatic version of the car, Maruti wants to cater to the growing number of medium to large city customers looking for automatic hatchbacks, which are few in number at present.

BMW Plant Managing Director, Juergen Eder, said in a statement that the 5-Series would further increase the company’s momentum in the luxury car segment in India. Deliveries of the car are scheduled to begin at the end of July 2010.

BMW had overtaken competitor Mercedes-Benz as India’s largest luxury car maker in financial year 2009-2010, but fell behind the latter in the April-June quarter, largely because the earlier version of the 5-Series went out of production in early 2010. Now, with the car’s new version on sale, the company is hoping to regain the number-one slot in the segment.

While the company will introduce its much-awaited electric car, the Leaf, later this year, it will also launch a gas-electric version of the Fuga in Japan by December 2010, and in the US by 2011. The hybrid Fuga will be marketed in the US as the Infiniti M35. At present, the only hybrid vehicle sold by Nissan is the Altima, which is powered by Toyota’s hybrid technology. The company said this week that its CEO, Mr Carlos Ghosn, wanted to reduce CO2 emissions from its cars by 90 percent, compared to emissions in the year 2000.

Mr Shuichi Nishimura, a corporate vice-president at Nissan, said during a presentation in Yokohama that the company was looking to expand its Infini series. However, he did not say if it would continue to use Toyota’s hybrid system or replace it with its own in future projects. Nissan is exploring several eco-friendly technologies including gasoline engines, hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles and low-emission diesel engines.

The company will disclose the car’s expected price in August 2010, and will launch it in the Indian market by the end of this year. The Vento will be produced at Volkswagen’s Chakan plant near Pune, and will come in both petrol and diesel variants.

Meanwhile, the demand for the company’s latest hatchback, Polo, continues to outstrip supply, with a backlog of over 10,000 units. Volkswagen India Director (Passenger Cars), Mr Neeraj Garg, told mediapersons that the company had delivered 4,500 units of the Polo since its launch in April 2010, and that there were very few cancellations despite the heavy backlog.

Volkswagen’s sales in India have increased by 100 percent over the past six months, though its market share in the country continues to hover around 1.35 percent. Garg said that the company’s long term goal was to achieve 8-10 percent market share.
